Vibrant Communities Charter

Vibrant Communities are created when residents and decision makers recognize well-being is a reflection of society’s commitment to equity and justice and work toward a shared vision which includes:

 

  • community spaces to connect with others and nature as part of daily life
  • secure and affordable housing for all
  • sustainable transportation, including walkable streets, accessible public transit and places to cycle and wheel safely
  • required goods (e.g. healthy foods) and services (e.g. education and health) available to all
  • infrastructure decisions that protect the environment and save money in the long run
  • sustainable agriculture that is locally-supported – rural and urban
  • healthy, safe and meaningful work that is close to home
  • meaningful participation in community life and decision making by all

We the undersigned, acknowledge that well-being is determined by economic, environmental, social and cultural factors within a community. Achieving this vision of Vibrant Communities will require non-government organizations, the private sector, government and community members to work together, based on the guiding principles outlined in Vibrant Communities – A Plan for Action:

    Work together, within and across sectors, building on existing success and avoiding duplication
  • Community Involvement
    Be continually informed by and responsive to community voices
  • Informed Decisions
    Base decisions on consultation, best available evidence and promising innovation

    Ensure equity through a commitment to social justice

    Embrace and respect diversity within communities

 


Organization Charter Signatories

Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg’s vision is to support a self-sufficient, healthy, vibrant urban Aboriginal community, where families and children are ensured a good quality of life, through equal opportunity and choice so that Aboriginal people are a part of all things – a distinct presence throughout Winnipeg. The Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg was engaged in the development of the Vibrant Communities Charter.

The Central Neighbourhoods Development Corporation is a vibrant socio-economic development agency that helps residents build stronger and safer neighbourhoods in Centennial, Central Park and West Alexander communities of Winnipeg.  Our focus is on safety, education, health, local business growth, recreation, area revitalization and capacity building.  Our projects are built around the ideas and commitment of our community members and led by them.

Food Matters Manitoba (home of the Manitoba Food Charter) engages Manitobans towards healthy, sustainable, and fair food for all. We cultivate community food skills, develop partnerships and networks and provide food systems public education. In partnership we have developed over 30 community food projects, host the annual Growing Local Conference,Golden Carrot Awards,youth and school outreach projects, policy work, Farm to Cafeteria, and the Manitoba Food Security Network.

Green Action Centre promotes greener living through environmental education, by sharing practical solutions and advocating for change. Our organizations activities related to the Vibrant Communities Charter stem from our fundamental principals and beliefs. The Harvest Moon Society works to  educate, raise awareness and ultimately be more inclusive about our food, how it is grown, processed and distributed. All who are involved will ultimately determine the shape and direction of this initiative and we want you to be a part of the journey! In order to leave our communities as better places for future generations we need to reconnect urban and rural communities by building awareness of the contributions of farmers and farmlands to the development of vibrant rural and urban cultures and the maintenance of native habitats. The Harvest Moon Local Food Initiative is an effort to try and create a more local, fair and sustainable food system in Manitoba.

Healthy Brandon is a community coalition of committed residents and organizations with a shared vision to create a healthier Brandon. Part of the Healthy Together Now movement, our purpose is to reduce chronic disease by promoting physical activity, healthy eating, tobacco reduction, and stress management. As a community-led coalition we provide a venue for the community to identify barriers to good health and to act together to find solutions to make Brandon a Vibrant Community.

Manitoba Public Health Association

The Manitoba Public Health Association (MPHA) is a non-profit voluntary organization whose members work with many sectors to influence emerging and re-emerging health, social, environmental and economic policy decisions to improve the quality of life and well being of Manitobans. MPHA promotes awareness of public health by discussing issues from different perspectives, creating meaningful dialogue between Manitobans and the health professional community. Through our networking, MPHA can provide advice and support to communities and organizations concerned about public health and provide advocacy on issues that matter most to Manitobans.

In partnership with community, Partners Seeking Solutions with Seniors empowers people in making informed choices that support healthy aging.
