Community-Driven Health Impact Assessment

A Community-driven Health Impact Assessment tool is developed by communities and used to assess the potential effects of a project, program or policy. The tool respects the community’s values, beliefs and vision of a healthy sustainable community. It is based on the need for broader community participation in the development of healthy public policy.

This Community-driven Health Impact Assessment tool allows communities to:

  • Estimate the effect that a particular activity (policy, program, project or service) will have on the health and well-being of the community
  • Identify ways to maximize the benefits and minimize the harm of that activity
  • Provide a community voice to decision-makers considering the potential impact of the Activity

The People Assessing Their Health process increases people’s awareness of the determinants of health and well-being. It is a facilitated process allowing community members to develop indicators of well-being based on their own experience. These indicators can then be used as the basis for the Community-driven Health Impact Assessment tool.

Health in Common supports the use of Community-driven Health Impact Assessment by:

  • Promoting the People Assessing Their Health process as a means of enhancing citizen involvement in decision-making
  • Supporting the development and use of Community-driven Health Impact Assessment tools
  • Developing strategies to adapt the People Assessing Their Health process to an organization and/or community
