North of 53

The choices we make are shaped by the choices we have. In order to positively impact risk factors such as unhealthy weights, we must collectively address the social, economic, environmental and cultural aspects of community. Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada Innovation Strategies Fund, North of 53: Working Together to Build Vibrant Communities does this by:

  • Increasing collaboration through a regional North of 53 Collaborative committed to working toward common goals specific to healthy public policy and community planning for First Nations and Aboriginal and Northern Affairs communities
  • Increasing community engagement in three communities in northern Manitoba through participation in the development of community indicators of well-being
  • Increasing the knowledge of community members and organizations regarding the complex root causes that contribute to unhealthy weights and what can be done to address them

The project involves three key initiatives:

  1. Forums that bring together representatives from within and across sectors and jurisdictions for an opportunity to discuss the social, environmental and cultural well-being of a communities, specific to northern Manitoba. Participants identify opportunities to work together and identify shared priorities. (Forums include the Northern Health Conference, North of 53 Forum in Winnipeg and North of 53 Forum in the north).
  2. A regional Collaborative, made up of regional, provincial and federal representatives reflecting the economic, environmental, social and cultural factors that determine wellbeing. The Collaborative will identify and address shared priorities and move forward policy recommendations identified through the Forums.
  3. A Community-driven Health Impact Assessment (CHIA) Tool will be developed in three communities – to be used by community members to evaluate and provide feedback on proposed programs, policies, plans and developments. The CHIA tool is based on indicators of wellbeing developed through community conversations focusing on the determinants of health, as they relate to healthy body weights.
